Blockchain Ventures into Sports Industry as KNVB Launches a Blockchain-Powered Ticketing App

Royal Dutch Football Association is testing out a new blockchain ticketing app created to help fight counterfeiting and black market ticket sales.

The blockchain technology is proving to be a success as it gradually expands into various industries. Recently, on November 19, we witnessed the blockchain tech surface into the sports category, soccer, to be specific.

Ajax Life, a fanzine of the AFC Ajax, reported that the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) launched a blockchain-oriented ticketing application on November 19 during the European Championship qualifiers match between Netherlands and Estonia.

The match was played at the Johan Cruijff Stadium in Amsterdam, where the Netherlands took a victory of 5-0. The Dutch football association used the landmark match to launch its new blockchain ticket-booking application. The application was developed to aid reduce counterfeit tickets sold in the black market, according to Ajax Life.

The application will be dispensing PDF tickets that will grant football fans access to stadiums via the application. The digital ticket has a barcode that can only be detected within a specific set period of time within a certain radius from the stadium during match day. The new technology makes it impossible to resell one ticket multiple times, as has been the case over the years.

According to Ajax, if the trial will prove to be a success, its pioneers will build and develop on it with the aid of the European Regional Development Fund. AFC Ajax and KNVB had partnered in a number of innovations that were set for trial during the qualifying match and were initiated with the support of the Johan Cruijff Arena. There are other blockchain projects targeting the sports industry as well as the entertainment industry.

In October 2019, Shubert Organization, a leading ticketing company, announced that it would roll out an IBM blockchain-based mobile ticketing app.

Socios.com, a blockchain platform in international soccer, launched a branded club fan tokens in partnership with several football clubs, among them, being Juventus, West Ham United, and Paris Saint-German.
