United Nations to Use Blockchain in one of its Projects

The Organization of the United Nations, better known as the UN, has undertaken a strong fight against climate change, which can list different initiatives and programs that seek to save the environment. And one of them, which has just been revealed, will use the Blockchain technology to achieve it.

The organization signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), with the non-profit organization W-Foundation, dedicated to environmental issues and global aid, to collaborate with climate action.

According to the MoU, the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) will work with the W-Foundation, whose headquarters are in South Korea, to promote climate action projects, including compensation with cryptocurrencies to encourage people to take care of the environment.

This initiative focuses on the Blockchain-based HOOXI application of the environmentalist foundation. It has various games that encourage people to take climate measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in exchange for mission points, which they could use to improve their competitive ranking among users.

And each month 20% of the users with the best scores receive a reward in the W Green Pay (WGP) cryptocurrency.

It is hoped that this initiative can reach and raise awareness in that sector of society that is most familiar with technology, but which is necessary for the fight against climate change to be truly effective.

In addition to this, the MOU includes other projects in which both institutions should collaborate, such as developing a methodology based on the Activities Program for a subset of the HOOXI application portfolio and the application of distributed general ledger (DLT) technology in the compensation markets.

The United Nations has been characterized by using all the resources that it considers may be useful to achieve its objectives. For example, there have already been initiatives in which UN agencies use cryptocurrencies to raise funds or the chain of blocks to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Finally, we want to remember that both elements, climate change and Blockchain technology, have a common characteristic: both are, for some sectors, quite controversial topics to discuss. The UN will use Blockchain in one of its projects to combat climate change.
