FIDé Fashion Week 2013 kicked off in Singapore last week at the Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre with featured fashion shows by Pierre Balmain and Bread & Butter.
This exciting fashion event makes up Singapore and Asia’s first complete fashion season, where Men’s Prêt-à-Porter, Women’s Prêt-a-porter and the Couture collections will be presented through one spectacular offering. Over the course of 11 days (from the 9th of October to the 19th), guests will be enthralled with the fashion pieces created by some of the world’s most iconic and outstanding designers.
FIDé Fashion Week is the only Haute Couture Week held outside of Paris to feature couturiers endorsed by La Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. These remarkable fashion weeks have not only helped position Singapore as a global fashion city-state, they also serve as a great platform for blossoming local designers to showcase their work.
Last Friday, I attended the Burkman Bros. fashion showcase, which featured their collection of men’s casual wear that marries rugged everyday looks with preppy effortless styling. Behind this New York-based label are two entrepreneurial brothers, Doug and Ben Burkman, who believe in designing clothes they themselves would want to wear. True enough, their collection did project their carefree and honest personalities.
Right after the Burkman Bros. fashion show was a musical showcase by G-Dragon, also known as Kwon Ji Yong, a South Korean singer and rapper who is also the leader of the famous Korean boy band group, Big Bang. This 25-year-old multi-talented artist attracted a huge crowd of screaming fans who all came equipped with their idol posters and light sticks. G-Dragon’s presence has certainly livened up the atmosphere at FIDé Fashion Week 2013 so far with the sheer excitement coming from the crowd.
Right after G-Dragon performed, he was seen seated in the front row VIP-section during the subsequent fashion shows. Maybe I should have had him stay on for the rest of the show so that I could’ve caught a glimpse of him!
The opening of the Burkman Bros. show featured Alex Minsky, a former US-marine-turned-model, clad in a striped men’s jacket and bright, bold red Bermuda shorts. Best known for his ripped physique, which is covered in a myriad of tattoos, this 24-year-old model is recognized by many as an inspirational figure. He lost his right leg in Afghanistan after his truck ran over an explosive, which put him in a 47-day coma. Even with his prosthetic leg, he was still able to strut the walkway with no difficulty at all. The audience clapped and cheered as he walked down the fashion runway in style.
In the Men’s Prêt-à-Porter show by the Burkman Bros., there was a creative play of patterns like stripes and polka dots with a stark contrast of bright, youthful colors against the basic colors of grey, white and khaki. The colored prints made the outfit look youthful, fun and unpretentious; suitable for any casual occasions.
Lastly, the Spring/Summer 2014 collection by the Burkman Bros. ended in Hawaiian style as the male models walked down the runway in lei-printed graphic tee with colored shorts.
Stay tuned for the next post as I’ll be bringing you more updates on FIDé Fashion Week 2013.
